Mexico tunnel likely dug by drug cartel
The Mexico tunnel had been a path between warehouses in San Diego and Tijuana. Drug smugglers stored their stashes in these warehouses. The sophistication of the Mexico tunnel and also the cost of digging it suggests the operation is associated with a Mexican drug cartel. A Drug Enforcement Agency investigation started Tuesday when DEA agents noticed a suspicious looking semi-truck leaving a warehouse in an industrial area near the Mexican border. There were 10 tons of marijuana found within the trailer as a Border Patrol checkpoint stopped the truck. DEA agents then raided the warehouse and found one more 10 to 15 tons of weed.
Pot seized worth $20 million
A closet in a small opening within the floor was where the DEA agents found the Mexico tunnel. A 20 foot underground passageway with a rail running system that had been six football fields long which led to one more Mexico warehouse and had been lighted and ventilated. Another 4 tons of marijuana were found at the other side and Mexican authorities were alerted. About $20 million in marijuana was taken in by the DEA.
Not much of a dent in drug traffic
The Mexico tunnel is one of numerous discovered since a crackdown on drug smuggling has forced the drug cartels underground. In Mexican history, the largest drug bust happen in Tijuana last month when Mexican authorities found 150 tons of marijuana. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the recent seizures of drugs won’t stop anything. Illegal drugs will still come to the U.S. from Mexico. The Mexican government had a PR victory with the drug busts, Sarah Miller of the Monitor says. The Mexican U.S. ambassador wrote a letter to Miller. He was mad about what she said.
