Under The Redcoat Weekend – Experiencing 18th Century Williamsburg

The Under the Redcoat weekend that wrapped up June 26th brought to life 18th century Williamsburg that was still occupied by the British Army. Revolutionary war re-enactors put their heart and soul into the event that incorporated programs and presentations in Colonial Williamsburg. Based on this Daily Journal report, travelers really enjoyed a firsthand experience of what it really was like to live in these parts in those years during the reenactment.

History

At the end of the American Revolution, the British General, Lord Charles Cornwallis introduced martial law in these areas. Britain became a power to reckon with at that time and those that dared raise their voices in opposition to this enormous power faced countless trails and tribulations. This was the day and age recreated at Colonial Williamsburg last weekend ending on June 26th. Guests were treated to the informative events, activities and demos concentrating around life during the 1781 British occupation here.

Highlights of the Under the Redcoat events

Activities that formed a component of the Under the Redcoat weekend included live shows by some of the leading names in Broadway. Grammy winner Doug Katsaros and Emmy nominee lyricist William Schermerhorn presented a wonderful concert created for the Colonial Williamsburg audience. This program included the various musical styles from across the U.S.A, incorporating country, rock, pop, blues and swing. Presented by a Broadway star studded cast, that was certainly a ‘not to miss’ presentation.

Other than this, travelers could also witness the drills and exercises, artillery presentations along with parades that the British soldiers carried out when they occupied these areas. A dragoon presentation and firing competition showcased the expertise of the British troops. The events that followed- the declaration of martial law, giving freedom to enslaved Virginians who agreed to join British troops, the marching in of the Provost Guard- these were the highlights of the actual re-enactment.
