Sushi A Famous Drag Queen Speaks Out

Queen

As shown on CNN every New Year’s Eve and the most famous Drag Queen Key West has to offer, and the past winner of The Queen Mother Pageant has been a mainstay of the drag scene for over 20 years, is known as “Sushi” the Queen of all the Key West Queens,” “The most talented Queen in Captivity,” and she’s considered one of the most gorgeous, most extremely talented, and definitely the most fabulous of Key West’s many talented drag performers.  Sushi took some time from her busy schedule of running the Cabaret with its 15 drag performers to sit with us……I asked her

How long does it typically take you to get ready for a show?

Well, I usually have a couple of cocktails to get my character groove on, then it takes me a couple of hours to do my hair, makeup and get into my outfit.

What are some of the highlights of your show? How is it different from other performers in Key West?

My performances are different in that I am a drag queen, not a female impersonator. I like over-the-top makeup, as in color and amount of application, spiked heels, big voice, and beautiful hand made clothing, fabulous gowns and a big attitude.

Tell us one of the craziest things you’ve done on stage?

Hmmm…outrageous…When I was hosting a show I asked for my favorite drink and brand of Vodka, when I saw whiskey being poured into my glass  I was so upset I turned up my nose and poured it all over the closest person’s head.

Can you explain to us how your stage character compares to who you really are?

We are two completely different people. I’m shy off stage, but when I put on my drag queen stage performer make up, everything changes In the way I act, the way I carry myself, my favorites and dislikes, and I cannot be held accountable for my actions.

Who are some of your idols or famous people from whom you draw inspiration?

Lady GaGa, Cher, Madonna, Aqua, Bjork, and many more performers…the more glamorous and classic they are the better I like them.

How would you describe the gay community in Key West? What are some of its strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths are that there is so much culture in Key West for the size of the community. And we have such a giving community, much more so than many larger cities. They don’t have the charity benefits and fundraisers for injured or sick community members and groups that we have here. Weaknesses could be that there are many little groups and “cliques” in the community that sometimes it gets in the way of our motto of being “One Human Family”. Our community needs to become more united as our Key West slogan states “one human family”.

Do you have any personal fashion tips for the successful gender makeover?

Don’t ever try to use duct tape on bare skin, it hurts like hell, and make sure your favorite lipstick is on all the time darling.

Thanks Sushi for taking the time to answer a few questions …
